The voluntary acceptance of suffering as the Cross, as a gift of God's
love for our spiritual perfection, raises us to the height of the holy
martyrs. The Christian, for example, who in his bed of suffering, who
strives and endures and gives thanks to God, becomes a confessor
of the power of faith and a contemporary martyr, inasmuch as by
accepting the Cross he transforms his involuntary suffering into
voluntary suffering.
