The cross is not only “the type” or “the symbol” or “the sign” of Christ, but it is also a way of life for Christians, or rather “the way of life for Christians.” Just as there is no true Christ without the Cross, so there is no true Christian without the Cross, i.e. without participation in the Cross of Christ, as the Saviour himself tells us: “He who does not take up his cross and follow me cannot be my disciple” (Luke 14, 27).
