God puts the mark of excellence on those who do good only because they
desire to do God’s will. To those who do good, in order to enjoy heaven, He
gives a lesser mark. To those who do good, in order to avoid hell, he puts an
even lower grade. But all three grades are above the necessary threshold and
therefore promotable.
