The one who is a lover of self, according to the Holy Fathers, can be neither a friend of God nor a friend of humans. He may pretend that he is, but at heart he loves only himself with a sick love. Unless we crucify our love of self on the Cross of Christ, we cannot be His true disciples, for we cannot acquire His true love.
