If you love God, you will enter immediately into the will, onto the road of God, you will go into the commandments of God. For you, God will be every- thing and you will obey God.
Who among us today can say: ‘I certainly obey God, do His will; my goal and longing are to do the will of God’? Theoretically, we can say all this, we might want these things, but afterwards, in practice, we do our own wills and follow our own whims.
And our own wills are not just that I didn’t go to church or that I told a lie and so forth, but that we are attached to our way of thinking, our thoughts, our own inner world, which is the prison where we are incarcerated and suffer and suffocate and become wretched. We don’t understand. We don’t want to understand.
What is it, after all, this self of ours, that we are so tightly attached to and take such pride in?
